Carnahan Middle School
Client: William B. Ittner Inc.
Owner: St. Louis Public Schools
Completion Date: June 2002
Const. Value: $8,000,000
ABNA
provided site plans for the 6-acre property. Site elements included
walkways and sidewalks, 66 parking spaces, a play area that also provided
space for 15 bus slots and a 500’ double wide circular drive for buses,
and all topsoiling, seeding, sodding, and fencing.
To prepare the site, an
existing 25,000 square foot building will be removed and an HDPE liner
will underlie the new 72,000 square foot building. The liner was
necessary because the owner and MoDNR were concerned about contamination
due to hydrocarbons under the existing building and a portion of the
site. This required a slab on grade / grade beam foundation system to
accommodate the HDPE liner and buffer system that was designed by the
geotechnical consultant under the direction of MoDNR.
Our design team made
recommendations on balancing the earthwork to minimize the need to
excavate contaminated soil or borrow new material. The elevation for the
finished floor sub-grade was then developed based on the grading balance
in consideration of site elements such as drainage and pavement and
sidewalk cross slopes.
ABNA also created the site
demolition plan that considered a phased construction approach to
accommodate an accelerated schedule.
Pavement Improvement Program
Client: U. City School District
Owner: U. City School District
Completed: Sep, 1999
Const. Value: $350,000
This project involved preparation of contract plans
and specifications for eight (8) elementary school parking lots and
playgrounds within the district. ABNA
also provided full construction management services including materials
testing for the project. This was a fast track project for ABNA as
the design, bidding, and construction all had to be completed within a
nine-week period.
Existing parking
lots were removed, regraded and resurfaced. New parking lots were designed
and constructed to support the districts maintenance truck fleet. Drainage
design and other utility adjustment were also incorporated in the plans.
The design utilized the recycling of the asphalt pavement as fill material
for subgrade in areas where the existing subgrade was unstable.

Pagedale City Hall
Client: KWAME Building Group
Owner: City of Pagedale
Completion Date: October 2000
Construction Value: $1,400,000
This design included topographic
surveys, site layout, selection of pavement type and thickness, drainage
(storm and sanitary), and parking layout design.
The site design and layout included
the storm sewer system, detention basins, sanitary sewer system, and
existing and proposed utility research and design. ABNA produced the
final civil site plans, site work construction estimates and civil
specifications. ABNA coordinated with MSD, St. Louis County, and other
entities to gain approval for these plans at various milestones.
Kim’s Kids Childcare Center
Client: Korte Construction
Owner: Kim’s Kids Inc.
Completion Date: Apr 2002
Const. Value: $1,500,000
ABNA was
the civil member of the design build team for this 9000 sq. ft. childcare
facility. The components of the site include the building, playground,
parking lot, and a service drive. ABNA was responsible for Design of the
nearly 2-acre Site, Utilities, and Public Agency Coordination. After the
initial kickoff meeting, ABNA worked closely with the project Architect to
refine the project layout, establish the earthwork balance and suggested
finish floor elevations from which final civil and architectural designs
were based. A unique component of the design was a subsurface drainage
system for the play are which consists of a geosynthetic fabric, drainage
net, and slotted HDPE French drain.
ABNA’s civil site plan consisted of the final
grading, paved areas, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water service, and
exterior lighting. The final grading design included the erosion control
plans and an earthwork estimate; and the storm sewer design consisted of
drainage area maps, plans, profiles, and drainage calculations. The
500-foot storm sewer collects water from the 20-space parking lot as well
as 14 roof drains, which connect directly into the system. The paved area
design provided entrance plans, profiles design of the internal drive and
parking striping plans.
To ensure
a quality final product, ABNA completed the utility service connection
design, including gas, electric, and telephone; and
coordinated between utilities, by addressing any
necessary installation sequencing and crossing details. All submittals
were coordinated through the City of St. Louis, St. Louis Metropolitan
Sewer District, St. Louis City Water Department, Laclede Gas, Ameren UE,
Southwestern Bell Telephone, and St. Louis City Fire Department.
U. City Maintenance Facility
Client: City of University City
Owner: City of University City
Completed: Oct 1999
Const. Value: $50,000
University City hired ABNA to help them upgrade their
maintenance and vehicle storage facility. This project involved expanding
the parking area and organizing the parking spaces according to size to
maximize space and efficiency.
The survey crews first obtained information about the
layout of the facility including buildings, fencing, and current storage
zones. The engineering department then met with City officials to design
a plan that would best fit their needs.
